The Operation Brock contraflow system will be activated on the M20 from Monday, 16 December, to manage anticipated high traffic volumes during the busy Christmas holiday period.
Overnight Road Closures for Deployment
To deploy the contraflow, the M20 will be closed overnight on Sunday, 15 December, between Maidstone and Ashford:
- London-bound: Closed from junction 9 to junction 8
- Coastbound: Closed from junction 7 to junction 9
The closures will be in place from 8 PM on Sunday until 6 AM on Monday, 16 December. Fully signed diversion routes will be provided, and drivers are advised to follow these signs rather than relying on SatNav instructions.
Operation Brock Details
The contraflow system will operate on a 13-mile stretch of the M20 between junctions 8 (Maidstone) and 9 (Ashford). It aims to ensure smooth traffic flow and improve Kent’s resilience amid potential disruptions at the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel.
Key instructions for drivers include:
- HGVs heading to the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel must join Operation Brock at M20 junction 8.
- All other coastbound traffic, including local freight and cars traveling to the continent, should follow signs to cross over and join the contraflow on the London-bound carriageway.
Advisory for Drivers
Sean Martell, National Highways’ Head of Service Delivery for the South East, urged drivers to plan ahead:
“Our job is to keep the country moving, and Operation Brock helps us during busy periods at Kent’s ports.
If you’re heading to the continent this Christmas, please use our TRIP guidance to plan your journey, check with your travel operator before setting off, and allow extra time. Always carry essentials like food, water, and sufficient fuel for winter travel.
Minimising Disruption
The overnight closure has been timed to minimize disruption to road users, ensuring the contraflow system is operational and ready for increased traffic volumes expected during the holiday season.
For further updates, drivers are encouraged to check the National Highways website and stay informed about travel conditions.
