A prolific shoplifter from Swindon has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting to nearly 20 theft offences.

Steven Lloyd, 48, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on August 13 after pleading guilty to 19 counts of shop theft.

The court heard that between February and July 2025, Lloyd repeatedly targeted stores in North Swindon, stealing items including pet food, bathroom products and alcohol.

Magistrates sentenced him to 36 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered him to take part in a 26-day accredited programme and complete up to 10 days of rehabilitation activity.

PC Matthew Richter, from Wiltshire Police, said:

“Lloyd is a prolific offender with numerous theft convictions. Criminals like Lloyd can have a devastating impact on businesses and the wider community, which is why swift and effective action is essential. Shoplifting is a priority for Swindon’s neighbourhood teams, and we continue to urge everyone to report any incidents they witness so that action like this can be taken.”

Police are urging members of the public to report shoplifting and other offences. Anyone who witnesses a crime in progress should call 999. Non-emergency reports can be made by calling 101 or via the Wiltshire Police online reporting portal.
