Details
A man has tragically died after getting into difficulty while kite surfing off the coast of Camber Sands this afternoon, becoming the first confirmed fatality linked to Storm Floris.
Emergency services were called to the beach shortly after 3pm following reports that a kite surfer had been swept into trouble by powerful winds and rough seas.
Coastguard Rescue Teams, paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service, and specialist Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) were quickly on scene. Despite their best efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The UK Coastguard confirmed their involvement but stated that Sussex Police are leading the investigation into the incident. A spokesperson said: “We were tasked to assist in a multi-agency response this afternoon at Camber Sands. Sussex Police are now leading on this incident.”
The man has not yet been formally identified, and next of kin are being informed.
A Sussex Police source said: “We are aware of a fatal incident involving a water sports enthusiast in Camber Sands this afternoon. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
Storm Floris has brought dangerous weather conditions to much of the UK, with winds exceeding 70mph and coastal areas being battered by high tides and choppy waters. Authorities had issued warnings earlier in the day, urging the public to avoid entering the sea.
This is the first confirmed fatality related to Storm Floris, which is expected to continue affecting the southern coastline into Tuesday.
We are awaiting further updates from Sussex Police regarding the ongoing investigation.
