The Entertainer toy store in Romford’s Mercury Shopping Centre is shutting its doors for good. The group CEO, Andrew Murphy OBE, confirmed to the Recorder that the store is no longer “commercially viable” and the lease won’t be renewed. He expressed “considerable regret” over the closure, blaming shifting shopping habits and rising costs.

Local Fans Mourn as Store Shuts

Murphy said: “Sadly, it is a fact of retail life that shops sometimes have to close, as shopping patterns shift and cost growth outstrips sales increases. We remain committed to serving the people of Romford through our nearby store at Romford Brewery.”

The closure has sparked mixed feelings among shoppers. On our Facebook page, locals shared their emotional responses:

  • Ian Cooper: “Sad to see it go – hope the staff move in the Brewery Entertainer store.”
  • Sarah Jane: “This is where my son done his work experience. Such a shame. All the staff are so lovely – so sad for them.”
  • Carol Fletcher: “That’s sad to hear. They had lovely staff in there.”
  • Michelle Nevill: Described the closure as “sad.”
  • Richard Davis: “Love that store – spent loads there.”

Not Everyone Sad About The Exit

But not all are mourning. Some shoppers found the store pricey compared to rivals. Bela Green simply wrote: “Good riddance!” Others pointed out a second branch at the nearby Liberty Shopping Centre, hoping it will ease the blow. Carole Pereira blamed online shopping for killing the high street, while Janet Day warned, “we’ll be lucky if we have any shops left.”
