Hundreds scrambled in the early hours as a massive blaze tore through a Poundland store on Penge High Street. Around 4.30am on October 9, 100 firefighters rushed to battle the inferno, with police arriving shortly after.
Residents Evacuated, No Injuries Reported
Forty nearby residents were evacuated to a safe rest area as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported despite the size of the fire.
Police and Fire Brigade Launch Investigation
The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are working with the London Fire Brigade to determine the cause of the devastating fire. No arrests have been made so far, but enquiries remain ongoing.
"At around 04:55hrs on Thursday, 9th October, police were called to reports of a fire in a shop on High Street, Penge," a Met spokesperson said. "Officers attended alongside the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service. Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution and no injuries have been reported.”

High Street Remains Closed
The fire left a large section of the Poundland's ground floor blackened and damaged. High Street is still shut to all traffic as emergency services wrap up their investigation.
