Merseyside Police have confirmed that a man has tragically lost his life following a serious road traffic collision in Liverpool City Centre. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 7 at approximately 01:10 BST on The Strand (southbound). Officers were called to the scene following reports of a collision involving a white Audi TT, a grey Toyota Auris, and a pedestrian who was on the footpath.
The 44-year-old male pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was immediately treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital. Regrettably, Merseyside Police have now confirmed that the man has succumbed to his injuries. A post mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Connor Mears, a 28-year-old individual with no fixed abode, who was driving the white Audi TT, has been charged in connection with this incident. Mears appeared at Wirral Magistrates Court on Monday, October 9th, where he pleaded guilty to all charges. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, November 6.
Two other individuals, a 53-year-old female and a 36-year-old male from Southport, who were arrested in connection with the incident, have been released pending further enquiries.
Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, the Lead Investigating Officer from the MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased during this difficult time. The family is currently receiving support from specially trained officers.
DS Timpson also expressed gratitude to the local community for their assistance thus far in the investigation, particularly those who provided aid to the injured individuals at the scene. While a suspect has been charged, Merseyside Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward. Any piece of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could be vital in their investigation.
