HM Chief Inspector of Prisons Report:

Charlie Taylor’s report in January 2022 stated that safety at HMP Styal was “reasonably good”. It acknowledged four self-inflicted deaths since the last inspection in 2018, three of which occurred during the early days of custody.

Challenges Faced by the Prison:

  • Staff Shortages: These have delayed plans to improve supervision of the houses, affecting oversight of at-risk inmates and timely responses to violence and inmate requests.

Background of HMP Styal:

  • History: Originally an orphanage, it transformed into a women’s prison in 1962.
  • Capacity and Structure: The facility can house 422 inmates and comprises Edwardian house blocks amid tree-lined avenues.

Ongoing Concerns:

The recent deaths highlight continued challenges in managing inmate safety and well-being, particularly for those at risk of self-harm. The report points to the need for enhanced supervision and staffing to address these critical issues effectively.

Authorities and prison officials are expected to review procedures and implement necessary measures to prevent future tragedies. The investigations by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will provide more insights into the circumstances surrounding these unfortunate deaths.
