Tragic Incident at Wythenshawe Tram Stop

An 11-year-old boy has been left with life-changing injuries after falling between a tram and the platform at Brownley Road tram stop in Wythenshawe, %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_0%%.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Tuesday afternoon following reports of a child being "dragged underneath" the tram as it moved away from the platform.

A large police cordon was quickly established, and officers appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Air Ambulance Called as Boy's Condition Stabilises

The boy was airlifted to hospital and is currently in a stable condition. It is understood that he slipped before the tram started moving, resulting in his serious injuries.

A neighbour said "I just heard all the sirens – police, ambulance, and a helicopter landing across the road. It was shocking. I only found out what happened later, and it's just horrible."

Transport Disrupted Amid Police Investigation

  • Tram services between Roundthorn and Manchester Airport were suspended due to the ongoing police inquiry.

Official Statements and Response

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said:

"Emergency services are currently attending a serious incident at Crossacres tram stop in Wythenshawe. A boy was struck by a tram and has been taken to hospital with life-changing and potentially life-threatening injuries. Trams to Manchester Airport are currently suspended as we carry out our enquiries."

Danny Vaughan of Transport for Greater Manchester added:

"Our thoughts are with the boy and his family at this difficult time. We've been working closely with Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to respond swiftly. Our priority now is supporting the police investigation and ensuring our staff involved also receive support."

By late Tuesday evening, roads had reopened, and tram and bus services were back to normal.
