The battle against Covid has taken a sharp turn with the arrival of two fresh variants: Stratus and Nimbus. Experts are sounding the alarm after spotting a brutal new symptom – a hoarse or “razor blade” sore throat – sweeping through those infected.
Covid Cases Surge Again as New Variants Spread
George Sandhu, deputy superintendent at Well Pharmacy, urges anyone feeling these tell-tale signs to get tested immediately. Infection numbers are climbing fast. Latest government stats show 447 new cases recorded in the week to September 24 – that’s a 22% jump in just a week. Hospital admissions are up too, with 157 patients admitted up to August 31, a rise of more than 15%.
Deaths have also crept upward, with four fatalities logged in the week to September 19, pushing the UK’s Covid death toll to 82.
Know the Symptoms: Hoarse & ‘Razor Blade’ Sore Throats
Covid remains a respiratory virus, spreading through coughs, sneezes, and breath – much like the common cold or flu. But Stratus and Nimbus bring new warning signs. Those struck by Stratus report a hoarse throat early on. Nimbus victims describe their sore throat as feeling like razor blades slicing through.
Other classic symptoms to watch for include:
- High temperature
- Persistent cough
- Loss of taste or smell
Follow NHS Rules to Stop Spread
Sandhu stresses the need for Brits to stick to NHS Covid guidelines to protect loved ones and vulnerable groups. The rules:
- If you’re over 18 and test positive, isolate for five days.
- Under 18s should isolate for three days, as children tend to clear the virus quicker.
- If you live with or care for elderly or immunocompromised people, wait ten days before meeting them.
He adds, “Stay hydrated as Covid can cause headaches and a blocked nose. And if you test positive, rest, stay indoors, and keep away from crowds.”
Boosters and Testing at Well Pharmacy
Well Pharmacy offers both Covid antigen tests and booster jabs – crucial for those at high risk. George says, “The booster helps protect the elderly and vulnerable so they can face autumn and winter with confidence.”
Remember, if you’re feeling the sting of a sore throat that cuts like a razor, don’t ignore it. Grab a test and stay safe – the fight against Covid is far from over.
