Part of the single-storey church roof was damaged in the blaze, while a rear outbuilding was completely destroyed. The fire also caused external damage to a nearby terraced house, including its fascia and garden fence panels.

Emergency services treated seven people for smoke inhalation, with two taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service as a precaution.

Crews from Ilford, Barking, Plaistow, Stratford and Leytonstone fire stations responded to the incident, with a 32-metre turntable ladder from Greenwich also mobilised to assist.

The fire was first reported at 11.0pm, and the blaze was under control by 12:43am in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The cause of the fire has been recorded as undetermined, and a fire investigation will assess whether further inquiries are needed.
