A 27-year-old man has been banned from driving for four years after refusing to provide a breath sample at Melksham custody, following an arrest for drink driving.

Ross Philip George Miflin, of Maud Heaths Causeway, Kellaways, was stopped by police on July 28 after his blue Subaru Impreza caught the attention of officers on Hill Corner Road in Wiltshire. Upon being stopped, Miflin, who was the sole occupant, smelled strongly of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet, and admitted to having consumed alcohol the night before.

Miflin failed a roadside breath test with a staggering reading of 152 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, far exceeding the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken to Melksham custody. However, once there, Miflin failed to provide any further specimens for analysis. Initially, he claimed to have had Covid, and later stated he had lung cancer. Miflin later admitted that his refusal to provide a sample was an attempt to secure a lesser sentence in court.

At Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on August 13, Miflin was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for four years.

PC Mark Higgs from Wiltshire’s Roads Policing Unit commented, “This was a serious offence for which Miflin faced the possibility of prison. We will not tolerate drink driving, and this case shows that trying to buck the system doesn’t work.

Miflin’s case serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence, which significantly impairs a driver’s abilities and puts others at risk.
