Warning from Kent Police Rural Task Force

Douglas Robertson from Kent Police’s Rural Task Force warned that thefts of metal gates and fencing can be costly for farmers and landowners. He advised rural property owners to take extra precautions to secure equipment and to mark property for identification.

“Losing metal gates and fencing to thieves can be very costly, and we urge landowners to take steps to secure as much as possible and property-mark these items,” Robertson said.

He also encouraged owners to use serial numbers or unique markings to help police track stolen property.

“When we recover suspected stolen equipment, having unique marks or serial numbers on them helps officers reunite them with their proper owners,” he added.

How to Secure Your Property

The Kent Police Rural Task Force has shared key steps that landowners can take to prevent theft:

  1. Mark Gates and Fencing – Clearly mark items in multiple places to deter thieves and help police track stolen goods.
  2. Photograph Equipment – Take photos of your gates and fencing, showing any markings or unique features.
  3. Verify Purchases – If buying second-hand gates or fencing, check for signs of tampering or suspicious sales. Report any suspected stolen property to the police.
  4. Secure Gates ProperlyReverse the hinges and place padlocks inside a welded metal box to make theft more difficult.
  5. Use Security Signage – Put up visible warning signs stating that the property is security-marked and traceable if stolen.

The Rural Task Force has specialist equipment to help mark gates, fencing, and other vulnerable property. Landowners needing assistance can contact Kent Police for advice on improving farm and rural area security.
