A stabbing incident in Hackney this evening has led to the enforcement of a Section 60 order, granting police enhanced stop-and-search powers as they work to prevent further violence.

Hackney Police confirmed that officers responded to reports of a stabbing that resulted in non-life-threatening injuries. In addition, multiple calls were made to authorities about groups of males seen fighting with knives in the area, escalating concerns over public safety.

The Section 60 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (CJPO) was authorized at 6:00 PM and will remain in effect until 6:00 AM on Sunday, February 23. The order allows officers to stop and search individuals without the usual requirement for reasonable suspicion.

Area Covered by Section 60

The boundaries of the Section 60 zone are extensive, covering key parts of Hackney and surrounding areas. The designated zone stretches from Seven Sisters Road, starting at Seven Sisters BR station, across to Warwick Reservoir and Walthamstow Marshes. It extends down to Homerton High Street and Dalston Road, reaching Green Lanes and encompassing Brownswood Park, ultimately looping back to Seven Sisters BR.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Homicide Command are actively investigating the stabbing and the reports of knife-wielding individuals. Hackney Police have assured the public that intelligence is being continuously reviewed to ensure the Section 60 order remains proportionate and necessary.

A spokesperson for Hackney Police stated, “We understand the concerns this incident will raise among local residents, and we are using every resource available to ensure public safety. Section 60 is a vital tool in deterring violent crime and helping us prevent further incidents.”

Community Impact and Appeals

The spate of knife-related incidents has reignited discussions about youth violence and public safety in Hackney. Local councillors and community leaders are calling for increased engagement with young people and better access to support services to address the root causes of such violence.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information related to the stabbing or the groups involved in the knife fights to come forward.
