A substation fire in High Street, Wickford that broke out earlier today has spread to a derelict building, prompting an extended firefighting operation by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.
The fire, which began in the afternoon of Sunday, 18 May 2025, was brought under partial control after the electricity supply was isolated, allowing firefighters to extinguish the substation blaze at 4.06pm.
Fire Spreads to Adjacent Structure
Despite the substation fire being controlled, flames spread rapidly to a nearby derelict building, and crews remain on scene tackling the blaze.
Replacement crews from Great Baddow, Leaden Roding, Ongar and Tiptree have taken over from those first in attendance, as the incident enters its protracted phase.
Residents Told to Stay Inside
Authorities are urging residents to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke drift, and to avoid the High Street area while the emergency response continues.
A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said:
“Thanks to the safe isolation of the electricity supply, we were able to extinguish the substation fire. Crews are now working to bring the secondary blaze under control and stop further spread.”
Ongoing Incident – Stay Updated
Drivers and pedestrians are advised to stay away from the High Street area, and to monitor Essex Fire and local traffic services for live updates.
