Travel Chaos and School Closures

Tuesday’s snowfall caused widespread travel issues, with icy roads and rail delays leaving commuters stranded. More than 200 schools were closed, and further disruption is anticipated on Wednesday morning as the icy weather persists.

Key warnings include:

  • Ice alert for the South East and West Midlands, covering London, Birmingham, Leicester, and as far west as Exeter. This warning is in place until 10 am on Wednesday.
  • Snow and ice warnings for Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, with snow accumulations potentially exceeding 20cm on higher ground.

Motorists have been urged to plan their journeys carefully, carry winter emergency kits, and allow extra time for travel. Cyclists and pedestrians are also advised to take precautions on icy surfaces.

Extreme Cold Temperatures

Monday night saw temperatures plummet to -11.2°C in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, with much of the UK experiencing sub-zero conditions. Snow depths of 12cm were recorded in Nottinghamshire, with more expected overnight.

The Met Office’s chief meteorologist, Neil Armstrong, warned of further hazards this week:
“Cold Arctic air firmly in place over the UK means continued winter hazards are likely. More updates to warnings are expected in the coming days.”

Amber Cold Health Alert

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold health alert across England, except the South. The warning highlights significant risks to vulnerable populations, particularly older people and those with existing health conditions.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa of the UKHSA advised:
“It is vital to check on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours to ensure they are prepared for the cold weather.

Yellow health alerts remain in place for the South East, South West, and London.

Rail and Road Disruption

Train passengers faced delays and cancellations on Tuesday, with operators like East Midlands Railway cancelling over 50% of scheduled services. National Highways has deployed gritters to keep major routes open, but drivers are still advised to exercise caution.

Darren Clark from National Highways emphasized:
“Even where snow isn’t settling, icy patches can form. Drive carefully and prepare for sudden changes in road conditions.”

What’s Next?

The Met Office predicts more snow, heavy rain, and strong winds through the rest of the week, with warnings of possible power outages and rural areas becoming cut off.

As temperatures remain below average, communities are urged to stay updated on weather reports and prepare for extended periods of disruption.

Stay tuned for further updates on this ongoing weather emergency.
