A woman in her 60s has died and eight other people, including three children, have been hospitalised following a devastating multi-vehicle crash in County Down.

The collision occurred shortly after 10:20am on Friday on Portaferry Road, involving a red lorry, a silver Citroen Berlingo people carrier, and a white Audi A3.

Inspector Cherith Adair from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Collision Investigation Unit said:

“A red lorry travelling towards Greyabbey was involved in a collision with a Citroen Berlingo and an Audi A3, both travelling in the direction of Newtownards.

Sadly, a female passenger in the Citroen Berlingo, aged in her 60s, died at the scene.”

Three men, two women, and three children were all rushed to hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed.

The Portaferry Road remains closed as investigators continue examining the scene.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Inspector Adair urged any witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage from the area at the time of the crash to come forward.

“Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances of the collision, and we would like to hear from anyone who may have information that could assist.”
