A man who fled after a fatal car crash in Newcastle has been jailed.
Steven Wallace 22 was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison for causing the death of 19-year-old Joe Scott in an incident last year.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 15, when Wallace, driving a BMW at nearly 50mph in a 30mph zone, collided with a bus stop on West Denton Way where Scott and others were waiting. Scott sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wallace, of Lonnen Avenue, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident, driving while above the legal limit for drugs, and driving without insurance.
The investigation revealed that Wallace was five times over the drug-drive limit at the time of the collision. His vehicle was travelling at no less than 49mph in a 30mph zone when it struck the bus stop.
In a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court in July, Wallace admitted to all charges against him. Today, he returned to the same court for sentencing, where a judge handed down the prison term of seven years and eight months.
