Firefighters have warned about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries after a flat fire on Lanark Square, Isle of Dogs.
Smoke Inhalation and Damage
The fire broke out in a second-floor flat of a four-storey residential block. Fire crews arrived to find part of the flat damaged by flames. Three residents were treated by the London ambulance-service/" title="Ambulance Service" rel="nofollow">Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.
Lithium Battery Failure Blamed
The blaze is believed to have started due to the failure of a lithium-ion battery in a power bank that was charging at the time.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:
“Lithium batteries can fail if the wrong chargers are used. Always use the correct charger and buy official ones from reputable sellers. Unplug your charger when not in use, and never leave it unattended or charging overnight.”
“These batteries pose a fire risk if overcharged, short-circuited, submerged, or damaged. Protect them from knocks and drops, as damaged cells can ignite easily.”
Fire Crews Responded Fast
- The London Fire Brigade was alerted at 11:50pm.
- Crews from Millwall, Poplar, Whitechapel, and East Greenwich stations rushed to the scene.
- The fire was fully extinguished by 1:49am.
