A man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after subjecting a woman to a “terrifying, prolonged” attack in January this year.

39-year-old Michael David Kettlewell from Hartlepool was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday 8th November.

On 27th January this year, he subjected a woman to an assault in which he strangled her, threatened her with a knife and threatened to kill her.

During the incident the woman was not able to call police but managed to get a message to a family member who then contacted the police for assistance.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Genyfer Smith, said “The victim has suffered immeasurably not only just physically but emotionally and psychologically as a result of Kettlewell’s actions. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the victim and the witnesses in this case for their bravery and strength in coming forward and remaining supportive of the investigation.”
Michael Kettlewell is now also subject to a ten-year restraining order and was sentenced to three years and two months in prison.

DC Smith continued: “Tackling violence against women and girls continues to be a priority for Cleveland Police and we would urge anyone affected to report online or via the 101 number. We can offer safeguarding and support whilst enquiries take place, and we’ll do all we can to bring perpetrators before the courts.”
