Shopping Centre Evacuated as Police Investigate Potential Threat
A major security alert is underway in Hull city centre this evening after police discovered a suspicious package at St Stephen’s Shopping Centre.
Emergency Response
Humberside Police were called to Ferensway at approximately 6:20 PM GMT on Tuesday following reports of a potentially dangerous item found inside the shopping centre.
A 200-metre cordon has been set up around the area, which includes Hull Paragon Interchange, while a specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) has been deployed to examine the package.
Public Safety Measures
As a precaution, officers have evacuated the shopping centre and advised the public to stay away from the area until further notice.
A police spokesperson confirmed on social media:
“We have put road closures in place on Ferensway, Anlaby Road, and Spencer Street to allow emergency services to work safely.
Heavy Police Presence
Images from the scene show police officers standing behind cordons, with patrol cars blocking access to key roads in the city centre.
One eyewitness described the evacuation as “swift but calm,” adding that shoppers and commuters were quickly escorted out of the area.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the package contains explosive materials, but they are treating the incident with extreme caution.
No injuries have been reported at this time, and police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Latest Updates
Residents and commuters are advised to monitor local police updates for further instructions.
The situation remains under active investigation, and further updates are expected as soon as the bomb squad completes their assessment.
