A man has been found guilty of killing a vulnerable ex-doctor in a brutal Christmas Eve attack after a year-long campaign of abuse and exploitation.
Paul Campbell, 43, of Thornton Heath, has been convicted of the manslaughter of 62-year-old Gordon Ogunmuyiwa, a former doctor from Dalston, %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_0%%, who was found dead in a South London B&B.
The verdict was returned at %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_1%% Crown Court on Thursday, 8 May, following a three-week trial. Campbell is due to be sentenced on Tuesday, 10 June.
Gordon was discovered dead on the morning of %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_2%% Eve 2023 in a bed and breakfast room registered under Campbell's name. The court heard how Campbell had been physically and financially abusing Gordon, who had become increasingly vulnerable due to ill %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_3%%.
“Innocent man taken from his family”
Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, from the %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_4%%, said:
"Gordon was a gentle man with no history of %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_5%%. Ill health had made him vulnerable – something Campbell exploited. This was a selfish and callous act, driven by greed."
Evidence presented at %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_6%% showed that Campbell had been regularly assaulting Gordon, and even used his credit cards after his death to buy an iPhone from a second-hand shop.
Police launched a %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_7%% investigation after neighbours reported hearing violent disturbances the night before Gordon's body was found. A post-mortem confirmed he had suffered %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_8%%, with the final attack on 23 December being particularly savage.
Campbell was %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_9%%.
“Destroyed our family”
In a heartbreaking tribute, Gordon's sister Merion Wood said:
"Gordon was much loved and his %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_10%%. We thank the %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_11%% for bringing his killer to justice and pray no other family has to suffer like we have."
