A ruthless thief who targeted a Margate driver to snatch jewellery has landed behind bars. Julian Martinez, also known by aliases Gerado Escobedo Neri and Jason Chezez, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison at %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_0%% Crown Court.

Crime on Station Road – Caught in the Act

The shocking robbery unfolded on the evening of 25 July 2023. The victim was driving away from Station Road, carrying valuable items linked to their jewellery business. Martinez had been lurking nearby in a Mercedes, following the driver closely.

Unable to get inside the vehicle, Martinez smashed a window and grabbed a bag from the car. Despite the attack, the driver stayed behind the wheel and gave chase.

Heroic Good Samaritan Fights Back

A member of the public soon noticed the commotion and courageously tackled Martinez, wresting the stolen bag away and returning it to the stunned victim. The robber then fled in his Mercedes, but his freedom was short-lived.

Police Track Down and Lock Up the Offender

Kent Police launched a swift investigation leading to Martinez's arrest on 30 March 2025. Charged the next day, the 46-year-old, with no fixed address, admitted his guilt and was sentenced on 2 October.

"Martinez was cold and calculating, following his victim before subjecting them to a frightening ordeal," said Detective Constable Aimee Gossett. "I'm pleased he has been given a custodial sentence. I hope it offers him the chance to change his ways, and reminds those who would come to Kent to commit crime that we will track them down and bring them before the courts to face justice."
