The Metropolitan Police have made over 20 arrests in a targeted operation across Greenwich, Lewisham, and Bexley, focusing on crime hotspots in the area.
The arrests were for a range of offences, including drink driving, robbery, sexual offences, criminal damage, vehicle theft, and possession of weapons. Officers also issued several community protection warnings for shoplifting and other reported crimes.
The operation involved newly recruited officers from the Police Now programme, a two year graduate scheme designed to equip recruits with essential policing skills. These officers worked alongside experienced Met Police officers, patrolling streets and engaging with local residents to enhance community relations and safety.
Building Relationships With the Community
Police Constable Victoria Ackford, one of the new recruits, highlighted the importance of connecting with the community.
“Whilst patrolling the high street, we were thrilled that so many members of the public engaged with us and came to say hello,” PC Ackford said. We were grateful to have people be so open and honest with us. Their insight into the community was invaluable as they brought us greater understanding and awareness of the local area.”
Ackford emphasized the value of building trust and working closely with residents to address local concerns. “My colleagues and I now feel excited and ready to begin the next part of the programme in neighbourhood policing teams, where we endeavour to keep the public safe and hold offenders to account.
Festive Period Patrols
The operation, conducted during the festive season, aimed to provide reassurance and a visible police presence during a typically busy and often challenging time for law enforcement.
Ackford added: “We hope our presence in the community was appreciated and we felt honoured to have served them during this part of our Police Now training. I wish all those who celebrate a happy festive period and look forward to continuing to form strong bonds with the public and helping to protect communities across London.”
Community and Safety Impact
The arrests and proactive engagement have been praised by local leaders and residents, who noted the importance of visible policing in tackling crime and improving safety in the community. The operation is part of a broader initiative to strengthen neighbourhood policing and ensure safer streets in south east London.
The Metropolitan Police have urged residents to report any suspicious activity or concerns to help maintain safety throughout the holiday season.
