Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has stepped in amid rising tensions over the sudden appearance of flags in various parts of Sussex. The displays have left some residents feeling anxious and on edge.

Patriotism or Provocation?

Mrs Bourne acknowledged the UK’s deep-rooted pride in national flags but warned that in some areas these symbols are causing division rather than unity.

“Millions of people in our islands are patriotic and deeply attached to the flags of their home nations and the United Kingdom,” she said. “In less fractious times, seeing your flag normally instils feelings of belonging and pride… However, it is clear that in some places, the appearance of flags is making some communities feel deliberately targeted and intimidated.”

She stressed that while the flag bearers may share genuine national pride, their actions are unintentionally stoking anxiety and risking clashes.

Call for Calm and Strong Action

The PCC urged politicians and community leaders to “lower the temperature” and heal divisions rather than deepen them.

Adding to the fallout, council workers tasked with removing flags from public property have faced abuse and threats. Flags are often taken down for safety or to prevent disorder — but this has sparked anger.

Mrs Bourne made it clear that while Sussex Police aren’t responsible for flag removal, officers will uphold the law firmly.

“The Chief Constable has also reassured me that Sussex Police will not tolerate violent, abusive behaviour or attempts to provoke confrontation.”

Tensions Rise Across Sussex

The commissioner’s statement comes as various communities report heightened tensions stirred by these flag displays. Sussex faces a delicate moment with unity hanging in the balance.
