Two Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers, PC Alannah Mulhall and PC Joe Gerrard, have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for their exemplary courage in the face of grave danger during a harrowing incident in Leicester Square.
In the early hours of September 16, 2022, PCs Mulhall and Gerrard responded to a call regarding a male arrested for spiking, with a victim in need of assistance. While attending to the situation, they heard a commotion on the street and bravely approached, only to be confronted by a knife-wielding assailant.
Despite being attacked, PC Mulhall, who sustained a deep stab wound to her arm, remained composed and swiftly called for backup. The assailant, undeterred by attempts to subdue him with Tasers, PAVA spray, and baton strikes, continued to pose a threat to both officers and the public.
Focusing on public safety, PC Mulhall and her colleagues stood their ground, ensuring bystanders stayed clear of the perilous situation. However, the assailant targeted PC Gerrard, stabbing him multiple times, and causing severe injuries including a punctured lung. Swift medical intervention prevented further harm to PC Gerrard.
Both officers underwent surgery for their injuries and returned to duty in 2023. Despite their ordeal, PCs Mulhall and Gerrard actively contributed to operational learning, sharing their experiences to mitigate future risks.
The assailant, sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years on December 8, 2023, was brought to justice thanks to the officers’ bravery and dedication.
Metropolitan Police Federation Chair Rick Prior commended the officers‘ extraordinary valour, emphasizing their pivotal role in averting potential fatalities. Inspector Michael Richards echoed this sentiment, highlighting their unwavering courage in confronting a dangerous suspect.
Superintendent Jill Horsfall praised the officers’ remarkable bravery and resilience, acknowledging their instrumental role in removing a violent offender from the streets and preventing further harm.
PCs Mulhall and Gerrard exemplify the finest qualities of police officers, demonstrating selflessness and valour in the face of adversity. Their nomination for the Police Bravery Awards is a testament to their exceptional service and dedication to public safety.
