Around 40 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) have been deployed to tackle a significant fire in Barking town centre today (Friday, August 30). The blaze broke out in a mixed-use building on East Street, near Barking Abbey Grounds, prompting a swift and large-scale emergency response.

The LFB reported that the fire started in a property believed to house both retail units and flats above. Six fire engines were dispatched to the scene as crews worked urgently to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings.

The LFB has urged people to avoid the area to allow emergency services to manage the situation effectively. In addition, several bus routes, including the 62, 287, and 368, have been diverted due to the fire, causing disruptions in local transportation.

By 1:12 p.m., the LFB confirmed that the fire had been brought under control. However, firefighters are expected to remain on-site for some time to ensure the area is safe and to carry out investigations into the cause of the fire.
The fire in Barking is a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by fires in densely populated urban areas, and the swift action by the LFB has been crucial in managing this emergency.

Residents and businesses in the vicinity have been advised to stay clear of the affected area until the situation is fully resolved and the site is deemed safe.
