The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has charged Metropolitan Police officer Christopher Harrison, 67, with causing death by careless driving following a tragic incident in west London earlier this year.

The charge relates to a collision that occurred on May 10, 2024, at the junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in Earl’s Court. Helen Holland, an 81-year-old pedestrian, was struck by a police motorcyclist and later succumbed to her injuries.

The decision to bring charges against Officer Harrison follows a thorough review by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Rosemary Ainslie, Head of the CPS Special Crime Division, stated that the case highlighted the severe consequences that can result from traffic incidents involving emergency service personnel.

Officer Harrison is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 6, 2024. The CPS emphasized the importance of fair proceedings, urging the public and media to avoid any prejudicial commentary before the trial.

The CPS further noted that the criminal proceedings are now active, and Officer Harrison retains the right to a fair trial. It added that its role is not to determine guilt but to assess whether it is appropriate to present charges for the court’s consideration.

Helen Holland’s family is being supported through this process, as they cope with the loss of their loved one. The case underscores the responsibility that comes with driving in emergency situations and the importance of adhering to public safety protocols.
