The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has initiated a new investigation into individuals suspected of assisting or facilitating the alleged offences of Mohamed Al Fayed. This follows a public appeal for victims to come forward and a significant increase in allegations against the late businessman.
New Allegations and Victim Support
Since the appeal, 90 new victims have reported incidents, with some detailing multiple offences. The reports are being reviewed by the Complex Investigation Team (CIT), a dedicated unit within the Met. Detectives are actively pursuing all reasonable lines of inquiry and are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for early advice.
Investigation into Facilitators
As part of the ongoing investigation, specialist crime detectives are examining the roles of several individuals linked to Al Fayed. They aim to determine whether these individuals were complicit in enabling or covering up his alleged offences.
The Met is also conducting a thorough review of previous investigations, analyzing over 50,000 pages of evidence, including victim and impact statements. Investigators are utilizing advancements in modern techniques to identify any potential missed opportunities in past cases.
Past Investigations and IOPC Referral
While no charges were brought against Al Fayed during his lifetime, the Met acknowledges the impact on victims and the shortcomings in victim support during earlier investigations. Complaints from two women regarding investigations in 2008 have been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to ensure transparency.
Commander’s Statement
Commander Stephen Clayman, of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said:
“I recognise the bravery of every victim-survivor who has come forward to share their experiences, often after years of silence.
This investigation is about giving survivors a voice, despite the fact that Mohamed Al Fayed is no longer alive to face prosecution. However, we are now pursuing any individuals suspected to have been complicit in his offending, and we are committed to seeking justice.”
He added that the Met is determined to rebuild trust by addressing these allegations with integrity and thoroughness.
Appeal to Victims and Witnesses
The Met is urging anyone with information about Al Fayed’s alleged activities or the involvement of others to come forward. Specialist detectives are available to provide support, and survivors will be given access to confidential services.
