A new rehabilitation service aimed at helping NHS staff suffering from musculoskeletal conditions return to work has been launched by the Government and Nuffield Health.
The programme will provide free support to NHS workers in England suffering from conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and joint problems, which are among the leading causes of staff absence in the health service.
How the Programme Works
? 12 weeks of exercise and rehabilitation tailored to NHS staff needs
? Support from personal trainers and specialists to improve strength and mobility
? Initial rollout in 10 NHS trusts across London, Birmingham, and the North West
? Expansion to more NHS trusts nationwide later in 2025
The Department of Health and Social Care estimates that 4,000 frontline workers will benefit from the scheme, helping them return to work faster and improve their overall well-being.
Government’s Response
Health Secretary Wes Streeting praised the initiative, stating:
“This programme will help get thousands of NHS staff back to work, improve their quality of life, and allow them to continue to cut waiting lists.
With record pressures on NHS services, reducing staff absence due to musculoskeletal conditions is seen as a crucial step in improving workforce retention and patient care.
Next Steps
The rehabilitation service will initially run in 10 NHS trusts, with plans to expand nationally later in the year.
Further details on how NHS staff can access the programme will be provided by individual hospital trusts as the rollout continues.
