Father, 45, Gunned Down in Stoke Newington: Police Investigating Possible Gang Link

Overview

A Kurdish father-of-two was tragically shot dead in a quiet street in Stoke Newington, North London, in the early hours of Tuesday morning (5 August 2025).

Erdal Ozmen, 45, who ran a social club in Hackney, was found with fatal gunshot wounds on Dynevor Road shortly after midnight. Despite the efforts of paramedics and police officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local residents were awoken by the sound of gunfire and screams. Witnesses described frantic scenes as emergency services swarmed the area, cordoning off Dynevor Road and parts of Stoke Newington High Street.

 

 


While the Metropolitan Police has not confirmed a motive, some locals fear the killing may be gang-related. However, officers have stressed they believe this was an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public.

“A Very Good Guy, Always Helping People”

Mr Ozmen’s friend, Ali Rizi Ojur, told  UKNIP:

“I’ve known him for more than 20 years. He was a very good guy, always helping people. He has two kids and a family. It’s heartbreaking.”

Residents Recount the Shocking Night

Resident Liza Dodds, 58, said her husband heard the gunshots:

“We both got up and saw a police officer doing CPR. It felt like they were going forever.”

Another resident, Rosa Gilbert, added:

“There were gunshots, then police and ambulances arrived quickly. There was a lot of commotion, a lot of screaming.”

Several forensic officers were seen examining the scene, searching under parked cars with torches, and a forensic tent was erected outside the victim’s home.

Murder Investigation Underway

Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads policing in the area, said:

“Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to this tragic death. Residents will notice an increased police presence as we carry out our enquiries.”

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information or dashcam footage, to contact the Serious Crime Command on 101 quoting CAD 108/5AUG. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Sixth Fatal Shooting in London This Year

This is the sixth fatal shooting in London in 2025, raising renewed concerns over gun crime in the capital.
