A 61-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 28 years for the rape and murder of his ex-partner, 54-year-old Samantha Mickleburgh, in a tragic case that has shocked the Devon community.

James Cartwright, of Southampton Road, Axminster, was convicted last week by a jury at Guildford Crown Court, following a harrowing three-and-a-half-week trial. He was sentenced today (Friday, 8 August), receiving concurrent sentences of life for murder and nine years for rape.

Cartwright, who had invited Samantha to a hotel for his 60th birthday — a trip she agreed to out of compassion — violently attacked her in the early hours of 14 April 2024. A forensic post-mortem revealed strangulation marks and a fractured skull, contradicting Cartwright’s claim that Samantha had “fallen” during the night.

A Final Act of Kindness Met with Violence

According to evidence heard in court, Samantha had ended the relationship but agreed to accompany Cartwright to the hotel as a final act of kindness. However, this trip turned deadly when Cartwright, described as obsessive and controlling, attacked her in their hotel room.

After the killing, Cartwright phoned emergency services and falsely suggested Samantha had died from a fall. He was arrested five days later and maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and trial, offering no explanation for the fatal injuries.

He was acquitted of a third charge of controlling and coercive behaviour, though prosecutors detailed a pattern of alarming conduct leading up to the murder — including uninvited visits to her home, surveillance, and persistent harassment.

Detective Condemns “Callous” Actions

Detective Inspector Debbie Birch, who led the investigation, described Cartwright as a man who “could not bear to let go” and ultimately murdered a kind, compassionate woman out of possessiveness.

“Cartwright ensured that Samantha was never able to move on with her life. His refusal to accept the end of their relationship, despite being involved with another woman, resulted in the most horrific outcome,” she said.

“He has never shown any remorse or taken responsibility. Today’s sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the loss inflicted on Samantha’s loved ones.”

Family Tribute: “She Truly Was the Best of Us”

Samantha’s family released a heartfelt statement following the sentencing:

“We are relieved this has come to an end and that the defendant has been seen for who he truly is — a rapist and a murderer.

“Samantha wouldn’t want to be known as a victim. She would want to be remembered for her honesty, strength, and compassion — the best of all of us. The hole she has left in our lives is unimaginable.

“Justice will not bring her back, but it has brought closure. We continue to ask for privacy as we grieve and try to navigate life without her.”
