A man has been arrested after reportedly throwing an unknown substance at two people in Welling. The incident occurred on Bellegrove Road just before 7 pm on Tuesday, August 22.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the man allegedly targeted a man and a woman with the substance as he fled the scene after police were called to respond to a report of an attempted car theft. Both victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. While testing of the substance is ongoing, it is not believed to be acid.
Emergency services, including the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service, were called to the scene as a precaution. The nature of the victim’s injuries has not been disclosed.
Following a search, the police arrested a man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) and burglary. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police provided further details: “At around 18:43hrs, police were called to Bellegrove Road in Welling after reports of a man trying to steal a car. As he fled, he is reported to have thrown a substance at a man and woman. LAS and LFB attended as a precaution. The man and woman were taken to hospital. While testing continues, it is not believed to be acid. Officers searched the area and arrested a man on suspicion of GBH and burglary. Enquiries are ongoing.”
