Man Charged with Murder of Hamzah Iqbal Outside Wembley Stadium
A 29-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Hamzah Iqbal, 25, who was fatally stabbed outside Wembley Stadium in September 2023.
Dontae Smicle, of Monks Park, Wembley, was formally charged on Tuesday (15 July) after being extradited back to the UK following his arrest abroad. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today (16 July).
Victim Stabbed Near Olympic Way
Police were called to Olympic Way, Wembley at 11:00pm on Sunday, 24 September 2023, after reports of a stabbing near Costa Coffee, close to the stadium’s main approach.
Hamzah Iqbal, 25, was found suffering serious injuries. He was treated at the scene and rushed to hospital but tragically died a short time later.
A post-mortem conducted on 27 September confirmed the cause of death as sharp force trauma to the chest.
Major Investigation Leads to Arrest Abroad
Following an extensive investigation by Metropolitan Police, Smicle was located outside the UK and arrested. His extradition was successfully carried out this week, leading to his formal charge for murder.
Police Statement
A spokesperson for the Met Police said:
“An investigation was launched after police were called shortly after 23:00hrs on Sunday, 24 September 2023 to reports of a stabbing in Olympic Way, Wembley.
Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found Hamzah Iqbal with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.”
