Emergency services evacuated passengers from a London Underground train at Kennington station following reports that a suspected alkaline substance was sprayed on a tube carriage.
The incident occurred shortly after 9:10pm on Platform 3, prompting a swift response from British Transport Police (BTP) and Transport for London (TfL). Five police vehicles were seen outside the station as officers rushed to the platform, cordoning off the area and treating the event as a “security alert.”
🔍 What Happened at Kennington?
Witnesses on board the train reported seeing a substance sprayed along the side of a Northern line carriage. In response, officers evacuated all passengers from the train and the platform as a precautionary safety measure.
A BTP spokesperson confirmed that a specialist team was deployed to examine the material, which is believed to be alkaline in nature. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and medical assistance was not required.
Service Disruption
While investigations were underway, northbound services between Kennington and Moorgate were temporarily suspended, causing travel disruption across the Northern line. TfL issued a security alert via its real-time travel update system.
Services resumed later in the evening after the scene was deemed safe.
Ongoing Police Investigation
British Transport Police stated:
“Officers were called at around 9.10pm on Friday (6 June) to Kennington Underground station following reports of a substance being sprayed on the side of a tube carriage.
Specialist officers attended and the train was evacuated as a precaution. There were no reports of any injuries.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.”
No arrests have been made so far. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident or suspicious behaviour in the area before the alarm was raised.
