A 52-year-old man has died in hospital after suffering injuries while being restrained by another customer during a disturbance at a Co-op food store in Torpoint, Cornwall.
Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to the branch in Fore Street at about 4.45pm on Wednesday (6 August) following reports that a man had allegedly assaulted staff and become abusive towards customers.
During the incident, the man — who was from Torpoint — was restrained by a member of the public. He became unresponsive at the scene and was treated by emergency services before being taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
Police confirmed he died on Saturday (9 August).
A man in his 40s from the Millbrook area was arrested on suspicion of assault and has since been bailed until 1 November pending further enquiries.
In an earlier statement, police said the alleged disturbance inside the shop had caused concern for staff and shoppers, prompting calls for immediate assistance.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said:
