QE2 Bridge Closed After Lorry Crash Causes Fuel Spill and Injures Woman

The QE2 Bridge at the Dartford Crossing has been closed in both directions after a lorry crash caused a major fuel spill across all lanes late Thursday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 11:05am, just ahead of the bridge. A woman sustained minor injuries in the crash and has been taken to Basildon University Hospital, the East of England Ambulance Service confirmed.

Fuel Spill and Road Damage

The lorry’s fuel tank ruptured on impact, spilling diesel across the entire carriageway, prompting emergency services to close the crossing in both directions.

Crews from Essex Police, the fire service, and the ambulance service remain on scene, working to:

  • Contain and clean the fuel spill

  • Assess structural damage to the road surface and barriers

Officials say the road is expected to remain closed for several hours due to the severity of the damage.

Police and Ambulance Statements

A spokesperson for Essex Police said:

“It is important drivers affected by this incident continue to drive safely, and we ask for their patience while we ensure the road is safe.
Drivers should check before they travel and plan their journeys accordingly. We will share further updates regarding the reopening of the road in due course.”

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust added:

“We sent an ambulance and an ambulance officer vehicle. A woman was transported to Basildon University Hospital with a minor injury.”

Travel Disruption and Advice

Drivers are facing severe congestion in both directions, with tailbacks stretching toward J29 (Romford) and the A13 from Grays.
Motorists are advised to:

  • Avoid the Dartford Crossing

  • Use the Blackwall Tunnel or M2/M20 as alternatives

  • Follow local traffic bulletins for real-time updates
