Amber Heat-Health Alert Issued as London Braces for 34°C Heatwave
An amber heat-health alert has been issued across London and several regions in England as the UK braces for its second intense heatwave of the summer. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the warning effective from 12pm on Friday, June 27, until 6pm on Tuesday, July 1, citing expected surges in heat-related deaths and pressure on healthcare and infrastructure.
This is the second amber alert to be issued this month, following a similar one on June 19.
Temperatures to Peak at 34°C in London
Forecasts from the Met Office indicate that London will see temperatures rise steadily:
- 27°C on Friday, June 27
- 29°C on Saturday, June 28
- 31°C on Sunday, June 29
- 34°C on Monday, June 30
- 31°C on Tuesday, July 1
The alert affects London, the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and South West.
Health Risks and Pressure on Services
The UKHSA warns of an increased risk of death, especially among over-65s and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Care homes and hospitals may overheat, putting further stress on NHS staff and emergency response capabilities. The alert also mentions potential disruptions to transport services, power infrastructure, and frontline care delivery due to the extreme heat.
Rise in Drowning Incidents Sparks Water Safety Warning
With people expected to flock to rivers and lakes to cool down, London Fire Brigade has raised concerns about water safety. The brigade has already responded to over 280 water-related incidents this year, a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Tragically, 15 of those incidents resulted in fatal drownings.
To coincide with Drowning Prevention Week, firefighters are stepping up public awareness campaigns. During a visit to Kingston Fire Station, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey observed a demonstration using the Brigade’s river flume tank, highlighting the dangers of currents and hidden underwater hazards.
Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha said:
“With warm weather and school holidays on the horizon, we want people, especially young people, to enjoy our waterways safely. That starts with education.”
Safety Advice and Public Response
Deputy Mayor of London Jules Pipe urged caution:
“London’s rivers and lakes may look appealing in this heat, but they can pose serious dangers. It’s crucial to stick to safety guidance and avoid swimming in unfamiliar or unsupervised locations.”
- Avoid going out during peak sun hours (11am–3pm)
- Keep cool indoors and stay hydrated
- Check on elderly neighbours and vulnerable individuals
- Use throwlines or public rescue stations near water
- Call 999 in an emergency
