A huge fire ripped through the Finches sports shop in Forest Hill last night, sparking chaos on Perry Vale. The blaze erupted just after 6.30pm on Thursday (October 16), gutting the shop floor, basement, storage areas, and the flats above.

Two residents and a dog were rescued from the burning flats by heroic members of the public before fire crews arrived.

Man Hurt but No Serious Injuries, Evacuations Underway

A man was injured but didn’t need hospital treatment, confirmed London Fire Brigade. Around 15 people from neighbouring buildings were evacuated to a rest centre. Most returned home overnight, though a few remain under local authority care.

Thick smoke forced the temporary closure of Forest Hill Station, adding to disruption in the area.

Firefighters Battle Blaze Through Night

Crews fought the fire into the night, using two 32-metre turntable ladders and aerial drones to keep the flames in check. The fire was finally brought under control by 11.44pm and is believed to have started accidentally in a rear workshop during hot work.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jamie Jenkins: “Firefighters faced a fully-developed fire and worked hard to stop it spreading. We advised locals to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke, which also forced the temporary closure of Forest Hill Station.”

Station Commander Mike Watts: “A 25-metre cordon remains. Perry Vale is still closed to traffic. We’re supporting those affected and maintaining a visible presence while sharing fire safety advice with residents and businesses.”

Ongoing Investigation and Recovery

A small team remains on site, dousing hotspots and leading the investigation. Perry Vale stays closed to traffic as emergency services continue their work.
