A devastating fire tore through a house on Renshaw Close, Catford, early yesterday morning, destroying the first floor and loft conversion. The blaze prompted a massive response, with eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackling the incident.

Dramatic Rescue

Firefighters rescued a woman from the roof of the property using a nine-metre ladder. According to Station Commander Mike Watts, the woman had climbed onto the roof to escape the fire but began slipping from the pitched surface. A firefighter on a ladder secured her while a second ladder was erected to bring them both safely to the ground.

The woman, along with two other occupants who managed to escape before firefighters arrived, was taken to the hospital. One of the individuals is believed to have sustained serious injuries, while the woman is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire Contained and Investigation Underway

The fire was brought under control by 9:39 AM, but crews remained on the scene to damp down hot spots. Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Disruption in the Area

Although Ravensbourne Park remains closed, rail services at nearby Catford Station have not been affected. Station Commander Watts urged residents to avoid the area while the emergency response continues.

Public Response

The London Fire Brigade received more than 20 calls about the fire, highlighting the scale of concern from the local community. Crews from fire stations in New Cross, Beckenham, Greenwich, and Lee Green joined efforts to extinguish the fire.

Official Statement

Commander Watts praised the efforts of his team, saying:
“The quick actions of our firefighters saved a life today. This incident highlights the importance of having a clear escape plan in place and ensuring your home is equipped with working smoke alarms.”
