1-Year-Old Girl Dies After Serious Assault in Newport — Adoptive Parents Released on Bail as Murder Probe Launched

Overview

Police have confirmed that the 1-year-old girl at the centre of a serious assault investigation has tragically died in hospital this afternoon, despite extensive efforts by medical teams.

The child was initially rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport early on Friday morning, before being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for specialist treatment. However, her injuries proved too severe, and she sadly passed away.

Red Flag Sparked Immediate Investigation

Local clinicians raised concerns regarding the nature of the girl’s injuries, prompting Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary to launch an immediate investigation.

A 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, both from Dairy Crest Drive in Newport, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent approximately 12 hours after emergency services were first called. It has since been confirmed that the pair are the child’s adoptive parents.

Both individuals were released on conditional police bail until 1 November 2025, as police enquiries continue. The investigation is now expected to be upgraded to a murder investigation.

Police Appeal for Calm Amid Rumours

Inspector Oly Greenhowe, of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, said:

“This is understandably a troubling incident for the community, and we want to reassure residents that a dedicated team of officers is actively working to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.
We are urging people to stop speculating online about this case. Speculation and the spread of rumours are not only unhelpful, but they can actively hinder the progress of our investigation.
If people have relevant information on this incident, then they should contact the police directly.”
