Five Just Stop Oil protesters, including co-founder Roger Hallam, have been sentenced to significant prison terms for organizing protests that blocked the M25 motorway. The demonstrations led to extensive traffic disruptions and significant economic costs.

Roger Hallam, 58, was sentenced to five years in prison, while his co-defendants Daniel Shaw, 38, Louise Lancaster, 58, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, 35, and Cressida Gethin, 22, each received four-year sentences. The sentencing took place at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday.

Details of the Incident

The protests, which occurred over four consecutive days in November 2022, involved 45 people climbing onto gantries over the motorway, causing severe disruptions. The economic impact was estimated at £765,000, with additional costs to the Metropolitan Police exceeding £1.1 million. The protests caused more than 50,000 hours of vehicle delays, affecting over 700,000 vehicles, and left the M25 compromised for over 120 hours.

Prosecution and Trial

Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC detailed the extensive planning behind the protests, highlighting a Zoom call on November 2, 2022, where the defendants discussed their plans. A journalist from The Sun newspaper, posing as an interested party, recorded parts of the call and passed them to the police.

Judge Christopher Hehir noted the sophistication and extensive organization of the protests. He stated, “The plain fact is that each of you some time ago has crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic. You have appointed yourselves as sole arbiters of what should be done about climate change.”

Addressing Hallam, the judge remarked, “You are the theoretician, the ‘ideas’ man. In my judgment, you sit at the very highest level of the conspiracy.

Reactions and Statements

Following the sentencing, Hallam and his co-defendants, referred to as the “Whole Truth Five” by Just Stop Oil, expressed solidarity, shouting “We love you” from the dock.

Outside the courthouse, TV naturalist and Just Stop Oil supporter Chris Packham criticized the sentences, calling them “judicial thuggery” and highlighting the disproportionate punishment for peaceful protesters.

Packham stated, “I’ve just watched what can only be described as judicial thuggery, a total disregard for any mitigating circumstances when it came to sentencing. Disproportionately high sentences given to peaceful climate protesters in a world which is on fire.

Public and Political Response

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed her dismay at the scenes of unrest, while Councillor Salma Arif urged people to stay at home. Local MP Richard Burgon shared his concern, advising residents to avoid the area.

The sentencing has sparked debate over the balance between the right to protest and public safety. The significant prison terms highlight the legal system’s stance on disruptive demonstrations, particularly those impacting essential infrastructure like motorways.

Future Implications

There have been no protests on the M25 since November 2022, but the sentencing serves as a stark warning to future activists about the potential legal consequences of their actions. The Just Stop Oil movement and its supporters continue to advocate for urgent climate action, despite the legal setbacks.
