Two teenage girls have been charged after a 13-year-old girl was brutally assaulted on a Metro train near Wallsend station in North Tyneside.

The attack occurred at around 7:55pm on Friday, 8 April 2025, and has sparked outrage among commuters and renewed calls for better transport security across the Tyne & Wear Metro network.

Shocking Incident Leaves Girl Injured

Northumbria Police responded to reports of the assault aboard a train near the busy Wallsend station. Upon arrival, the suspects had already fled the scene.

The victim suffered extensive bruising and a sprained wrist and was taken to hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged and is being supported by specialist officers, according to Chief Inspector Dave Morrison.

Two Girls Charged with Assault

Two 13-year-old girls have been charged with common assault by beating following their arrest shortly after the incident. They are due to appear in court at a later date.

Northumbria Police have urged the public not to share speculation or unverified information about the case, warning that doing so could jeopardise ongoing legal proceedings.

Police and Community Demand Safer Metro Travel

Chief Inspector Morrison condemned the attack:

“Everyone deserves to feel safe when travelling. We are working closely with Nexus to ensure safety across the Metro network.”

The assault is not an isolated incident. In 2023, another violent attack occurred at Wallsend station, where a man was struck with a brick, prompting calls for long-term safety reforms.
