Sadiq Khan: Climate Change Is the “Defining Challenge of Our Time”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has described climate change as “the defining challenge of our time,” calling on governments to take stronger, faster action to protect lives and livelihoods.

Speaking at a climate summit in Paris, Khan stressed that while national governments often lag behind, it is cities that are leading the charge on climate action.

“The success of our climate response means lives saved and homes protected,” he said. “Cities are acting decisively where national governments are failing to step up.”

Cities at the Forefront

Khan, who has championed policies like the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London, said urban areas are uniquely positioned to implement practical environmental policies that benefit residents directly. He highlighted collaborative efforts between major world cities, including London, Paris, and New York, as examples of how local leadership can drive global change.

His comments come amid growing concerns over the slow pace of international agreements and rising global temperatures, with 2024 having been one of the hottest years on record.

Call for National Support

Khan also urged national leaders to match the ambition shown at the city level, warning that without coordinated effort, the world risks missing key climate goals.

“The cost of inaction is not theoretical. It’s measured in floods, fires, and lives lost,” Khan added.

The summit gathered mayors, scientists, and policy experts from around the world to discuss urgent climate adaptation strategies, emissions targets, and the need for climate justice.
